St. Veronica Religious Education 2021-2022

Welcome to Religious Education for the 2021-2022 school year!  We are pleased to announce that as one parish with two churches, we have decided this year to offer Religious Education programs at each building and encourage families to register for the program that will best meet their spiritual needs.  Please read the descriptions below for grades 1-8 and continue to either the St. Malachy Rel Ed page or the St. Margaret Rel Ed page to register.

St. Malachy Religious Education: Grades 1, 3-6

St. Malachy’s will be offering the “Family of Faith” program from Sophia Press for Grades 1, 3-6.  This year we will bolster our domestic Church by coming together to focus on the Sacraments—the way that God reaches out into our lives to give us help and a share in His Divine Life.

Families will receive a Parent Guide as well as Children’s Activity Books for each child.

  Each month:

  • Parents will have the opportunity to come together in prayer followed by a short parent session in which we will have discussion and fellowship.

  • Families will be provided with a guideline for the month’s activities as well as a parent session video which will outline the month’s topics.

  • Families will submit a sample of their child’s work.

  • Families will attend a program-wide social event.

 Each week:

  • Families will carve out a minimum of 30 minutes to sit down to complete the monthly activities.

  • Families will attend Mass.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our social events during the year. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Camille Mainardi at stmalachyreligioused@gmail.com.

St. Malachy Religious Education: Grade 2:

Families with 2nd graders will be following a separate curriculum specifically designed to prepare the students to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.  Families (parents and students) will have an in person meeting at the beginning of the year to go over the curriculum and receive materials.  Approximately every other week, families will be provided with a guideline for the next lesson to be completed at home.  These will be emailed to the families as well as posted to the religious education portion of the St Malachy website.  In addition, there will be two in person parent/student meetings and two in person student retreats (prior to First Reconciliation and First Communion) in order to do the final preparations for these sacraments.  There will be opportunities for families to volunteer to help with special projects throughout the year.

St. Malachy Religious Education: Grade 7-8:

Grades 7 and 8 will meet in person weekly on a weeknight.  Surveys will be going out soon to see which night works the best for the majority of families. Volunteers are needed in order for this program to run.

St. Margaret Religious Education:  Grades 1-5:

The Church considers parents the “first preachers of the faith to their children.” (Lumen Gentium, 11)  The 2003 National Study of Youth and Religion, as well as the 2017 Report on American Catholic Religious Parenting, have shown that 82% of children are active in their faith as young adults when their parents talk about faith at home, participate in church life and show their faith is important.  Keeping these facts in mind, we have decided to continue using the Family Formation program with the elementary school students at St. Margaret’s for the 2021-2022 school year.

The Family Formation program works in a monthly cycle.  During the first week of the month, students will have a 90-minute lesson with a catechist.  Also during that week, parents will watch a video for adult faith formation and then have a Zoom meeting with the Director of Faith Formation.  (If there is enough demand, we can also offer an in-person option for this meeting.)  These activities serve as support to help parents complete the weekly home lessons for the rest of the month with the students.  At the beginning of the year, families choose a consistent weekly time (about one hour) to complete these home lessons together.  The lessons consist of a section for parents to read and discuss with the children, followed by activities such as arts and crafts, games, and short storybooks.  At the end of the lesson, students complete a short quiz to be emailed to a Religious Education volunteer or to the Director of Faith Formation.  No other work needs to be submitted.  Parents have the freedom to schedule the home lessons at the time that works best for the family’s schedule, and to teach the material to their child or children in the way that the child or children can best learn.  There is just one lesson for students at all levels, and there are topics and activities that are meant specifically for grades 4 and 5. Monthly envelopes with lesson packets and activity materials will be distributed to the students at each monthly catechist session and will be available at the Religious Education building for any student who misses class.  There will be special materials with brief extra activities for grade 2 students to prepare for First Reconciliation and First Communion.

We will definitely need volunteers to help with the program.  We are looking for catechists, parents to check off quizzes and provide feedback, and parents to help photocopy and assemble materials.  There is a section of the registration form asking if you may be able to help with the program.  We appreciate your prayerful consideration of this request.

St. Margaret Religious Education:  Grade 6-8

In the 2021-2022 school year, our middle school students will continue to meet roughly twice a month for instruction with a catechist using Gospel Weeklies.  The registration form includes a section for families to indicate the best times for classes to meet, so we can create a schedule from there.  We will need catechists for these classes, and there is a section of the registration form to indicate if you are interested in serving as a catechist.  We appreciate your prayerful consideration of this request.
